I saw two outstanding films the other weekend, and cannot get them out of my mind....
'Z is for Zachariah' Link is an allegorical tale full of symbolism...
It is set in a post nuclear holocaust world where almost all life is dead..The only exceptions are those who worked deep underground or in naturally secluded and protected valleys.
In such a valley, lives a 17/18 year old woman - surviving on her fathers farm...Her father was a messianic Christian preacher who built a small church on the property..She is a believer, reading a child's Christian book of biblical tales....'A is for Adam'....
Enter a strange creature, swathed in protective clothing, pushing a large cart....He is an engineer (an unbeliever) who was deep underground...He is in his 30's or 40's...He opens his eyes to this Eden like farm, a waterfall, and this beautiful woman....They realize they are the saviors of Humanity, they work together to grow food....She tells him that her younger brother went out looking for others, but never returned....They kiss, but he tells her that sex changes everything, and that there is plenty of time for sex...
Loomis wants to tear down the church for lumber to build a waterwheel that will drive an electric generator...(for Light)
Now enters another survivor (the snake) Caleb..He is young, handsome and is drawn to Ann...
Loomis, sensing this, confesses to Ann that he loves her, and that he has this painful secret...He is guilty of probably killing her brother when he found him dying of radiation poisoning. Ann forgives him, and they agree to have sex...Loomis lays down on the bed, exhausted from his confession and his waterwheel efforts, falls asleep..
Ann, now sexually aroused, goes to Caleb's room and they spend the night together....
The next morning Loomis senses what happened (by their touching and glances) and forgives them...He is black, and feels that maybe these two white youngsters should populate the world...
Ann is mortified, for her 'sin' and begs forgiveness....
Loomis and Caleb go to the waterfall to install the waterwheel....When connected the 'light' goes on in the house and there is electricity...As they finish at the waterfall, Caleb slips and falls down the precipice.
Loomis pulls him up with a rope, and as Caleb stands, they exchange meaningful eye contact....But Caleb slips again, and Loomis begins to pull him to safety.....The scene ends there...Next scene, Loomis arrives home, and Ann asks him where Caleb is....Loomis answers "He left"..The film ends here, for you the viewer to write your own ending...
1.Was the title 'Z is for Zachariah' the end chapter in the child's book?
(the end of Eden)
2.Was Zachariah the name of Ann's possible child by Caleb...
3. Did Caleb really leave?
4. Did Loomis kill Caleb?
The next film is a documentary 'Wolfpack' Link an amazing true story of nine children raised in a Lower East Side NYC apartment.
Six brothers, never went outside more than once a year (not always), never spoke to others....They live at the whim of their Hari Krishna fathers rules....They just had each other...The mother, once a hippie also followed the fathers rules....But she home schooled the family, earning a teaching certificate so that she could get paid teaching her large family...That was their income....
The boys were clever, and lived a life thru watching films....They knew every word, glance etc. of every scene of thousands of films (of all kinds)....They acted them out, making their own costumes and props out of scrap material....
One day, the father allows them to go outside, they are dressed in black and dodge (like a wolfpack) through the people walking....
The filmmaker, notices them and because of here camera and film cache, is accepted by the boys....Over the next 5 years she films them, as they wrest control of their existence from their father....That they are so very articulate, creative and thinking is an amazing achievement.....They will never be 'normal' (whatever that means), but they now fit into society.
